Electricians

There are two different apprenticeships: Electrician (Construction) and Electrical Telecommunications (Voice Data Video) Installer-Technician. The Electrician apprenticeship is a five year program with 8,000 hours of on-the-job training, 700 hours of day school class and night school classes. Construction Electricians install, connect, test and maintain electrical systems. Apprentices take the state Journeyworker license exam at the end of the apprenticeship.

Electrical Telecommunications (Voice, Data, Video) is a three year program working with low-voltage systems. Training includes 4,800 hours of on-the-job training, 432 hours of day school and night classes. Technicians design, integrate and install products that transport voice, video audio and data signals. Areas of work include alarm, security, home automation, data cabling, sound and communications.

Both programs involve work indoors or outdoors in a wide range of conditions. It is strenuous work, and often involves working on ladders and lifts. Apprentice wages are based on a percentage of the Journeyworker hourly wage, and there is a progression through six pay periods.

Applicants must be 18 years old and have a high school diploma or GED to begin work. Must be able to perform the work of the trade and have a minimum of one year of algebra with a C or better. Or one post-high school algebra course with a C or better. (Or successfully complete Interactive ModuMath Algebra, available at Wisconsin Technical Colleges.) Submit transcript. Must be able to get to work and school on time, anywhere within the jurisdiction. Applicants shall not be subject to discrimination because of age, race, color, religion, national origin, sex, creed, handicap, marital status, ancestry, sexual orientation, arrest record, conviction record or membership in the military forces. After submitting a complete application, and taking an aptitude test, applicants will interview with the apprenticeship committee.
