PAINTERS / DECORATORS

Work Description
Apply coals of paint, varnish, stain, enamel or lacquer to decorate and protect interior and exterior surfaces, trimming and fixtures. Remove old paint, smooth and tape surfaces, fill nail holes, cracks and joints; select and mix paint. May apply wallpaper, vinyl and oils; paint structures such as bridges and towers.

Working Conditions
The work may be indoors or outdoors involving standing, climbing, bending or working from a scaffolding. Much of the work is done alone requiring independent thinking, safety awareness and ability to communicate with the customer.

Qualifications
18 years old (unless a high school graduate at age 17) and high school diploma or GED
Physically capable of performing the trade
Possess valid driver's license
Able to distinguish colors
Recommended high school courses: general math, chemistry, print reading, drafting, basic science, English

Application Process
Apply to Joint Apprenticeship Committee
Submit high school transcript or GED
Pass a color test (no written test)
Interview with the Joint Apprenticeship Committee
Present letter of introduction to prospective employers for an interview

Terms of Apprenticeship
Painting and Decorating, 4 year program, at least 6,240 hours
Drywall Taping and Finishing, 2yearprogram, at least 3,120 hours
400 hours related classroom instruction (paid)
Additional 80 hours of night school on own time, if available
First 1,000 hours (6 months) are probationary period
Wage scale systematically increases throughout the apprenticeship.
