OPERATING ENGINEERS

Work Description
Operate heavy equipment including compressors, pumps, hoists, derricks, cranes, shovels, tractors, scrapers, and motor graders to excavate, move and grade earth, erect structural and reinforcing steel. Heavy equipment maintenance skills, grade instruments, welding and machine overhaul.

Working Conditions
Outdoors, frequently under adverse weather conditions.

Qualifications|
18 years old and high school diploma or GED
Valid Driver’s License
Physically fit for work in the craft with or without reasonable accommodation.

Submit copy of high school diploma (or transcript) or GED
Valid Driver’s License – Copy required
Job Service GATB Test – Only necessary if no HS diploma or GED
Take letter of eligibility to prospective employers for an interview
Attend orientation session after hire.

Terms of Apprenticeship
6,000 hours on-the-job training
 400 hours related classroom instruction (paid)
First
1500 hours (1st year) of work experience are probationary period
Wage scale systematically increases throughout the apprenticeship
